Vintage magazines as art

January 31st, 2010

I’m not one to just go and buy art to fill a space on a wall. Some spaces I feel I need to fill immediately while others I leave empty with the intent to embrace the minimalist look. But collecting clutter and being a pack-rat is in my blood, so those purposely empty spots are all filled now.

When working on the master bedroom I came across a few vintage magazine covers at a local antiques store. They were about $35/piece and then I went to Michael’s (with my coupon) and had them custom framed in this narrow, embossed silver frame. That wasn’t cheap, even at half price, but they are now beautiful statements in my bedroom. I think anything unusual that can be framed is way more interesting than buying mass-produced, pre-framed art.

AAA – and I don’t mean the auto club

Atelier Abigail Ahern is what I mean. Abigail Ahern has been featured in countless design magazines and I recently saw her Ostrich table on one of the 500 design blogs I subscribe to. She not only designs home interiors and hotel spas, but amazingly quirky furniture and accessories as well. She even wrote a book (that is on my list to get) called A Girl’s Guide to Decorating. Her style is on the darker side, but full of bold color and odd contrasts between old and new. Kinda reminds me of my style. Hmmm….if only I could get a book deal….ha. Check out the baroque-meets-modern pieces and tell me if you think setting your drink on the bottom half of an ostrich is strange.

Creative minds beware……

January 28th, 2010

After having a couple kids I’m heading back into the design world with fresh eyes. I’ve been out of the business for a few years now and my, how technology has changed things. I innocently decided to start a handbag project because every dumb celebrity is designing purses and still no one can get it right. But once I opened my mind (and the internet) to all the possibilities that this bag could become, my head started to hurt.

Spoonflower is a website that allows you to design your own fabric. You can print your vision on anything from suede to silk. Ponoko is a website that allows you to design anything that can be laser-cut into wood, plastic, acrylic, cardboard, felt, etc. Both websites give you step-by-step instructions on how to design things and even allow you to sell your products in their stores.

I had once thought that the only way I could get my hands on such custom materials would be to take many trips to the infamous LA fashion district. Which, by the way, I’m going to try next week. At that point I’m pretty sure my head will explode. But if I survive, I will tell you all about it.

The solution to the lighting problem in our kitchen:

January 27th, 2010

I’m not fond of the fluorscent lighting we had to put in our kitchen. And our eating area landed exactly mid-way between those hideously bright things and the can lights in our family room. This left us often unable to really see our food, which isn’t the worst thing in the world considering my cooking, but that’s another story all together. But I finally bought this fabulous garland light fixture from Artenica to fill the void. It  is very simple – laser cut metal garland that wraps around a bare bulb – but so stunning. It was designed by Tord Boontje, who is one of my favorites (did you see that Icarus fixture from a few posts ago?). In my home, I added a couple extra details to work it into my decor. I purchased the piece with a white cord and socket – but I thought they looked a little wimpy. I didn’t particularly like the idea of a heavy black cord coming out of my ceiling, but a better white one was not readily available, and the black cord was free. So, to soften the transition, I added a tiny medallion and spiced it up with some silver rub n’ buff – I pretty much add this stuff to everything. To get it to hang in the appropriate spot over my table, I had to swag it (white spray paint and more rub n’ buff on a brass hook) and tie it off with some florist wire. After 20 minutes of “fluffing” the garland, I got it just right.

Architectural Relics

January 25th, 2010

I just hung one of my xmas gifts – these fab birds from Architectural Relics in Escondido. This is such a fun store with really unique pieces.

It’s been raining and I’ve been inside too much.

January 20th, 2010

When I spend too much time inside I start to re-arrange. My poor husband comes home everyday having no clue where I’ve put anything. It started with my son’s room. Cleaning out the closet, moving stuff around on the bookshelves, and finally finishing my map project. I have always been obsessed with maps, so I am now pushing that upon my children. I want to encourage them to travel the world – or at least be more geographically inclined than I am.

I love the rain and maybe it’s the spark for my creative flow. I will take advantage of this gloomy weather and try to get all of my projects done before it’s over. Ha.

ABC Carpet and Home – Why didn’t they have these last year?

January 14th, 2010

I just found out that someone finally made the rug I was dreaming about last year during our remodel. I wanted a traditional oriental rug in fun, bright colors. I have a thing for contrast, obviously. Now my favorite store in NYC is making them. They cost a fortune, of course, but they are so cool. Check out the Color Reform rugs at ABC Carpet & Home.

Serena & Lily

January 11th, 2010

My mother-in-law just gave me this catalog last week and I had to share. It’s kind of a Anthropologie-meets-Pottery Barn. Specializing in bedding and baby items, this stuff is designed by a baby clothing store owner and a textile designer. The catalog is beautifully done and contains DIY ideas and paint swatches to accent their products. Check it out Serena & Lily online or order the catalog. I will be holding on to my copy for inspiration.
